Volume-preserving mean curvature flow of revolution hypersurfaces in a Rotationally Symmetric Space

In an ambient space with rotational symmetry around an axis (which include the Hyperbolic and Euclidean spaces), we study the evolution under the volume-preserving mean curvature flow of a revolution hypersurface M generated by a graph over the axis of revolution and with boundary in two totally geodesic hypersurfaces (tgh for short). Requiring that, for each time t, the evolving hypersurface M_t meets such tgh ortogonally, we prove that: a) the flow exists while M_t does not touch the axis of rotation; b) throughout the time interval of existence, b1) the generating curve of M_t remains a graph, and b2) the averaged mean curvature is double side bounded by positive constants; c) the singularity set (if non-empty) is finite and discrete along the axis; d) under a suitable hypothesis relating the enclosed volume to the n-volume of M, we achieve long time existence and convergence to a revolution hypersurface of constant mean curvature.Comment: 24 pages. We have added some lines at the beginning explaining the notation, and clarified a little bit more the proofs of Proposition 1 and Theorems 5 and 10, the statements of Proposition 2 and Corollary 3 and an argument in Remark 1. We have also completed reference 18. A version of this paper will appear in Mathematische Zeitschrif

Is the influence of quality of life on urban growth non-stationary in space? A case study of Barcelona

There are several determinants that influence household location decisions. More concretely, recent economic literature assigns an increasingly important role to the variables governing quality of life. Nevertheless, the spatial stationarity of the parameters is implicitly assumed in most studies. Here we analyse the role of quality of life in urban economics and test for the spatial stationarity of the relationship between city growth and quality of life.quality of life, urban economics, geographically weighted regressions

The lexicographical treatment of idioms in business dictionaries from the point of view of the translator as user

Economic language presents a hybrid nature. Unlike other LSPs, this discourse shows a high degree of emotive meaning, abstract processes like metaphor, which bring about the great number of idioms used in business English, and the complexity involved in their translation into Spanish. The analysis of the lexicographical treatment of five business idioms in nineteen dictionaries of economics (monolingual, bilingual, and multilingual) reveals that specialized lexicographical resources should improve their treatment of idioms and other phraseological units if they are to respond to the needs of users like translators. It is suggested that specialized works should include idioms as lemmas, offer more types of syntactic-semantic information and structure it more systematically, for example, by basing their entries on the conceptual structure of economy

A multi-ion beam microanalysis approach for the characterization of plasma polymerized allylamine films

EPJ Applied Physics 56. 2 (2011): 24021 with kind permission of The European Physical Journal (EPJ)A full characterization of plasma polymerized biofunctional films requires the use of multi-analytical approaches to determine the chemical composition, topography and potential interaction mechanisms of such films with biomolecules and cells. In this work we aim at underlining the versatility of ion-based techniques to contribute to the chemical characterization of plasma polymerized surfaces. The simultaneous use of energy recoil detection (ERD) and Rutherford backscattering (RBS) spectroscopies with incident He ions is an example of this versatility. Performing sequential measurements and the use of correlating computing tools for ERD-RBS interpretation allows providing in-depth concentration profiles of light elements, including namely hydrogen. More accurate analysis of light elements in polymer films can be increased by looking for particular ions with resonant backscattering responses (i.e., non-Rutherford Scattering). In particular, proton beams of 1.765 MeV are used to increase the detection of C and N, and particular incidence and detector angles to diminish the Si substrate contribution. These analytical tools have been applied to allylamine films and multi-layers crosslinked in a capacitive plasma onto both Si and porous Si substratesWe acknowledge MICINN funding provided by Grant No. MAT2008-06858-C02-01 and grant from Fundación Domingo Martíne

    Monitoring the Lisbon Strategy’s Targets

In this paper the monitoring of the Lisbon Strategy is analysed. In orderto do that, in a first stage a summary of the Lisbon Strategy is made, with ananalysis of its objectives, list of structural indicators and an overall evaluation. Abrief summary is made on the relaunch of the Agenda and on its consequences on thereform of the Cohesion Policy. In a second stage, we develop an analysis of the structuralindicators evolution against general economic background indicators both atcross section and temporal dimensions, focusing on economic growth. In this sense, the analysis made by the Commission is complemented with a discussion about theimplications that the evolution of these indicators may have on economic growth. This would provide a richer explanation on the role that these aspects are having inEU development and growth
